What you’ll need

  • Programming track
  • The decoder maker's manual (reset values differ)

Before you start

  • A reset wipes custom function mapping and sound settings.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Find the right reset for your decoder

Many decoders reset when you write to CV8 (the read-only manufacturer ID). ESU LokPilot: write 8 to CV8. Other makers use different values or CVs, so check the manual.

    Next: step 2
  2. Step 2: Put the loco alone on the programming track

Service-mode commands reach every decoder on the programming track.

    Next: step 3
  3. Step 3: Write the reset value

Write the value. Some decoders flash lights or jerk the motor to acknowledge.

    Next: step 4
  4. Step 4: Remove power for a few seconds

Lift the loco or switch the programming track off and on, so the decoder restarts with the defaults.

    Next: step 5
  5. Step 5: Check address and CV29

Read CV1 – a reset usually returns it to 3 (the NMRA default). Read CV29 so you know the starting configuration.

    Next: step 6
  6. Step 6: Re-apply your settings

Re-program the address, speed curve and function mapping. A JMRI roster entry makes this much quicker.

Tips

  • If you can't read CVs at all, check the decoder lock (CV15/CV16). The NMRA lock only accepts changes when CV15 matches CV16.

When to get expert help

If a decoder still won't respond after a reset and wiring checks, contact the decoder maker's support or a DCC repair service.

Questions people ask

I wrote to CV8 and nothing happened

Your decoder may use a different reset method. Read CV8 to find the manufacturer ID, then look up that maker's instructions.

What's CV7?

The manufacturer's version number – useful when asking for support (NMRA S-9.2.2).
